    What is Social Media?

Google+…Twitter…Facebook…YouTube…LinkedIn…as individuals and companies still wrap their heads around (a) what social media is and (2) the direct benefits of jumping on board, we came across this great article and video by Mashable that explains it best:

    by Ben Parr

If you’re a regular reader of Mashable, you’re likely a firm believer in the power of social media. We’ve highlighted how the social web can improve your career, aid charitable causes, transform businesses and even change the world. In short, we’re convinced.

But what do you say to someone who doesn’t get it? Maybe you have a boss who thinks social branding a waste of time or chatted with a friend who doesn’t believe that Twitter can help land her a great job. Maybe they have no clue what social media even is.

Last year, marketing director Marta Kagan helped solve this problem with her presentation What the F**k is Social Media?. It was quickly a social media hit for its wit and its very convincing case for the raw power of social media.

With the tremendous growth of Twitter, Facebook, and blogging in the last year though, Ms. Kagan thought it was time for a sequel. We couldn’t agree more. The stats she cites and the savvy she employs in What the F**k is Social Media: One Year Later makes it a worthy successor.

    Community Relations

Most entrepreneurs and small business owners don’t think of creating and implementing a community relations plan. Between working on the business and at times, still working within the business, who has the time, the brain capacity, and as for many, who knows where to start? Leave that to major corporations like Comcast, Peco Energy, and Campbell Soup, right?  Wrong!

Big corporations write big checks to charities because they can. While many companies confuse the two, there exists a difference between charitable giving and community relations. According to our trusty friend Webster, charitable giving is the act of giving money, goods or time to the unfortunate either directly or by means of a charitable trust, or other worthy cause. Community relations, on the other hand, is defined as the various methods companies use to establish and maintain a mutually beneficial relationship with the communities in which they operate.
